Prototype Release!

The first release of my first game. 20 days ago I was in the AAA games industry, now I'm out and making my own games. This is the prototype I've been working on for these three weeks.

My main inspirations are tabletop pen and paper RPGs, old 80s console RPGs like Dragon Quest. The ruleset is based on the TTRPG I wrote a few years ago when the keepers of a certain beloved IP made some questionable decisions. It's all dice. I mean all dice. You attributes and skills aren't numbers, they are a dice sizes. When the player takes an action, the GM formulates how many successes you need to roll and what counts as a success, then the player picks out which dice they are going to use. This gets the player talking about their action in a way my friends rarely do. Failures can be re-rolled, at the risk of downsizing your dice on a failure. Resources are also dice, which you roll into a dice pool for extra chances at success, but the resources are downsized on failures just like your attributes. The players are always the ones taking actions and rolling dice pools, even in combat. The monster doesn't roll against the player, they just attack and the player needs to decide how they will defend.

Whelp, I've talked too long about the underlying RPG rules. I'm excited to keep working on this project and would appreciate feedback.

So, what's in the prototype?

  • a navigable map to uncover
  • town with working shop and inn
  • combat with 8 creatures
  • skill and attribute advancement
  • equipment and inventory

More to come, like uses for your other attributes, and more skills!
